Malmoe International Guitar Festival 2009

Duo Guitarinet, Poland

Duo Guitarinet, the winner of the prestigious 2007 Wroclaw Music Prize awarded for the album Impresiones Argentinas, was formed by Jan Jakub Bokun (clarinet) and Krzysztof Pelech (guitar) in 1996. Musicians explore a wide variety of music by Latin American composers. In addition to the music of the world’s most famous tango composer- Astor Piazzolla, the duo also performs works of Egberto Gismonti, Benedetto Lacerda, Sergio Assad, Celso Machado and Radames Gnattali. Along with the collection of chamber music, Duo Guitarinet has in their repertoire the Double Concerto for guitar, bandoneon (arr. for clarinet) and string orchestra by Astor Piazzolla. This work, written in 1985 shortly before the master’s death, is often considered to be the most satisfying of Piazzolla’s concertos. New works have been written especially for the duo by Steven Lacoste, Mario Broeders, Jorge Morel, Pavel Smutny, Marek Pasieczny and some other leading Polish composers of the younger generation. Their first CD, Duo Guitarinet , was released in Poland by the Dux label. The album has been enthusiastically received in the international press and nominated for the 2000 Polish Music Industry Award. The second CD entitled Duo Guitarinet-10th Anniversary Album has been released in September 2006 on JBRecords, followed by Impresiones Argentinas, recorded with Camerata Moravia in the Czech Republic. Since their successful debut in 1996 at the Teatr Polski in Wroclaw, Poland, the duo has received invitations to perform at numerous international festivals in Poland, Argentina, Chile, Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Laurent Boutros, France

Laurent Boutros was born in 1964 in Maisons-Alfort , near Paris. While still young he attracted to music from oral traditions, and became interested in Flamenco, then popular Brazilian and Argentinian music, final folowing the music through to his origins. The search for the roots of such music now runs through his veins, and today Laurent Boutros counts Armenian and Caucasian traditionnal music among his passionate interests. In 1992 he began to compose several works for guitar that are imbued with the characteristic modes and rhythms of Asia minor. Then in 1997 he began to travel through Europe, making several tours in Turkey, Armenia, Maroc, Hungary, Montenegro, Switzerland and Cuba. As a guitarist he enjoys playing with others, and has performed with the jazz bass- player Renaud Garcia Fons, the Iranian Percussionist Bijane Chemirani and the Indian musician Ikram Khan.

Timo Korhonen, Suomi

Timo Korhonen, (b. November 6, 1964 in Rautalampi, Finland) has performed in more than 30 countries. He has appeared with orchestras under Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sakari Oramo, Osmo Vänskä, Leif Segerstam, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Susanna Mälkki, Tuomas Hannikainen, Joseph Swensen and John Storgårds. Timo Korhonen made his début at the age of 14 and began his international career at the age of 17 when he became the youngest ever winner of the guitar category in the ARD competition in Munich. He has studied with Oscar Ghiglia, Seppo Siirala and Pekka Vesanen. Korhonen’s repertoire includes the entire core repertoire written for his instrument. He has premiered more than 40 new works, and composers such as Magnus Lindberg, Leo Brouwer and Toshio Hosokawa have written works for him. Timo Korhonen is the founder and artistic director of the international GUITARISTIVAL competition and festival, and from 1998 to 2000 he was the artistic director of the Suomenlinna Culinary Concerts in Helsinki. He is a Docent at the Turku Music Academy. From January 2005 to the end of June 2007 he was a visiting professor at the national Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence. He was teacher at the Sibelius Academy in 1989-1999. His students have won more than 40 prizes in international competitions.

Javier Garcia Moreno, Spain

After a concert in Recital Hall in Carnegi Hall the American Journal of Classical Guitar wrote, "Javier Garcia Moreno got the teknique of international caliber, but in front of all he is a fascinating guitarist". Javier Garcia Moreno was born 1966 in Malaga. He conceived his exam at the academy of music in Madrid. Javier has played concerts in most of the major classical arena of the world.

Erik Steen, Sweden

Flamenco concert

Erik Steen började sin musikaliska bana på 1970-talet som trummis/slagverkare men bytte efter ett antal år till flamencogitarr. Erik har arbetat professionellt med gitarrspel sedan början av 1980-talet ,vilket har inneburit samarbeten med praktiskt taget alla Flamencoartister i Sverige samt även gästande artister från andra länder. Mellan 87-90 var han medlem i den Schweiziska gruppen ”Flamencos en Route” med många turneer i Schweiz , Tyskland,Österrike, Italien, Holland och Luxemburg.1989 startade Erik sin grupp Erik Steen Flamenco Fusion med vilka han spelat in 4 CD samt turnerat Sverige runt ett antal varv plus turneer i övriga Norden, Holland , Colombia, Kroatien och Mexico. Utöver detta har gruppen gjort ett stort antal Radio och TV-framträdanden genom åren. ESFF har även gjort några större projekt bl.a. ” Big Band Flamenco Fusion” 1998 med ”Stockholm Jazz Orchestra” samt körverket ”Misa Flamenca” 2003 tillsammans med Adolf Fredriks ungdomskör . Bägge skrivna och arrangerade av Erik Steen och Johan Alenius. Vid sidan av guppen har Erik även gjort en hel del teatermusik och även medverkat på bl.a. Riksteatern ,Unga Riks , Gottsundateatern (Uppsala), Samiska teatern (Kiruna), Stadsteatern i Stockholm , Dramaten samt ett antal fria teatergrupper. Mellan 1999-2000 arrangerade Erik tillsammans med gitarrsten Mårten Karlholm operan Carmen tillsammans med operasångare och dansare på Reginateatern i Stockholm. Föreställningen spelades närmare 120 ggr. Han har också gjort en hel del filmmusik både till spelfilm och dokumentärer och naturfilm. Erik har även varit verksam som studio-musiker på ett stort antal pop-produktioner. Erik har varit ”veckans artist” i SR P2 samt gjort ”veckans konsert” på SVT. Han har blivit tilldelad ett antal kultur priser samt vid ett stort antal tillfällen fått kulturstipendier , i första hand från Statens Kontnärsnämnd men även från t.ex. Musikerförbundet ,SKAP och STIM. 2007 blev Erik som en av få utlänningar inbjuden att delta som solist på Spaniens största Flamenco Festival ”Suma Flamenca” i Madrid. Erik Steen, vår svenska flamencostjärna, spelar denna kväll med Fredrik Gille, percussion, och Robban Svärd, percussion och gitarr. 2007 blev Erik Steen inbjuden att delta som solist på Spaniens största flamenco festival i Madrid.

Gitarrister från MHM i Malmö Gitarrstudenter från Musikhögskolan i Malmö bjuder på ett spännande och varierat program med solo och ensemblemusik för gitarr. Gitarristerna studerar på musikerutbildningen och IE-utbildningen, där deras lärare är Gunnar Spjuth och Göran Söllscher.

Stefan Östersjö, m.fl

New written music for the electric guitar

Stefan Östersjö, mfl: Samtida musik för elgitarr i pub/restaurangmiljö. Stefan Östersjö är en av Sveriges mest framstående solister och djupt engagerad i den nutida konstmusiken. C-Y contemporary har sedan ett par år tillbaka presenterat rykande färsk gitarrmusik inom ramen för Malmö Internationella gitarrfestival. Stefan lommer att spela verk av Kent Olofsson och Karlheinz Essl.

Stefan Östersjö is one of the most prominent soloists within new music in Sweden. Since his debut CD (Swedish Grammy in 1997) he has recorded extensively and toured Europe, the US and Asia. His special fields of interest are the interaction with electronics, and experimental work with different kinds of stringed instruments other than the classical guitar. As a soloist he has cooperated with conductors such as Lothar Zagrosek, Peter Eötvös , Pierre André Valade, Mario Venzago, Franck Ollu and Tuomas Ollila. He has published articles on contemporary music in many contexts and has lectured and given master-classes in the US, China and Europe.
